Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars has gone down in history as the Cabernet to put California into the world’s stage as a serious winemaking region. In 1976, the Judgement of Paris was a contest set up in France pitting French and Californian wines against each other in a blind taste test. With all French judges, the odds were definitely not in the favor of the Americans, in fact, most believed the blind tasting to be a clever ruse to make a mockery of the California wine industry. However, when the Chardonnay from Chateau Montelena and the Cabernet from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars won in their respective categories, they single-handedly served to put California on the map. For a winery established a mere 6 years prior, with their first vintage only being produced in 1972, this was a serious feat! The 1973 vintage was the historic bottle judged in 1976, and a bottle of said vintage now resides in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Tasting Notes: The 2012 CASK 23 combines the signature perfume notes of FAY vineyard with the structure and minerality of S.L.V. The wine opens with aromas of black cherry, dark plum, espresso and spice. A rich, ripe fruit entry leads to a concentrated core of dark fruit (plum, black cherry, dried currant).
